Your checklist

Choose a trip type to build your checklist.

Your checklist starts here. Pick a trip type on the left. The list builds as you change nights, people, season and how you cook.

How the planner works

  1. Choose your trip type: car camping, backpacking, RV or trailer, or backyard.
  2. Set the number of nights and the number of people, and say whether children are coming.
  3. Pick the season and how you plan to cook: campfire, camp stove or no cooking.
  4. Read the checklist. Items are grouped by category, such as Shelter, Sleep, Kitchen, Food storage, Safety and Leave No Trace.
  5. Check items off as you pack. The progress count updates as you go.
  6. Use Print or Copy to take the list with you.

Items meant for children appear only when you say children are coming. Items that depend on how you cook change when you switch between a campfire, a stove and no cooking.

What the quantities mean

Every item follows one of four rules:

  • Per person: one for each person. Example: a sleeping bag.
  • Per night: the amount grows with the number of nights. Example: stove fuel.
  • Per trip: one item, or one set, for the whole group. It depends on group size and not on nights. Example: a tent.
  • Fixed: the same amount every time. Example: a printed copy of the campground rules.

For water, food, heat and safety, the Planner shows a number only when an official source gives it. When there is no official number, the item says “Check local guidance.” Read the page for your park, forest or campground, because the Planner cannot know the rules of your location.

What this list does not cover

The list is a starting point. It does not account for the weather forecast, fire restrictions, wildlife rules, the health needs of your group or the rules of the place you are visiting. Those change by location and by day.

Guides on weather, campfire rules, food storage and more are in the article library. Read the Disclaimer before you rely on the list, and always check the official page for your campground.

Your checklist stays on your device

The Planner saves your settings and checkmarks in your browser’s local storage, under the name pp.planner.v1. This data is never sent to Pitch & Pack. It stays on your device until you remove it.

To delete it, press the Reset button in the Planner, or clear the site data for campspro.com in your browser settings. If you open the site in another browser or on another device, your saved list will not be there. The Privacy Policy has more detail.
